Letters of William Davis of Plymouth, Mass., to his daughter Betsy (Elizabeth Davis, later Mrs. George Bancroft) while she was a student in Hingham, Mass., 1816-1819. The letters concern family matters and social events, including brief descriptions of a wedding (Sep. 1818) and several parties. Also included are letters written to Elizabeth and George Bancroft in 1845, many requesting favors of Bancroft, newly appointed Secretary of the Navy. A letter from Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (Oct. 1845) and two from European friends (1884) are included.

George Bancroft was an American historian and statesman, and an active promoter of secondary education both in his home state and at the national level. As U. S. Secretary of the Navy under James K. Sarah Josepha Hale, née Sarah Josepha Buell, (born Oct. 24, 1788, Newport, N.H., U.S.—died April 30, 1879, Philadelphia, Pa.), American writer who, as the first female editor of a magazine, shaped many of the attitudes and thoughts of women of her period.
